Overview

Denmark's income tax system runs through your forskudsopgørelse (preliminary income assessment), the annual estimate SKAT (the Danish Tax Agency) issues before the year starts. Based on that estimate, SKAT calculates a personal trækprocent (withholding percentage) and monthly fradrag (deduction) for your employer to apply to each paycheck, aiming to land your total withholding for the year as close as possible to your actual final tax bill. This calculator models that final annual liability directly -- the same total your forskudsopgørelse is designed to approximate -- using the current 2026 statutory rates rather than reproducing SKAT's month-by-month trækprocent mechanics paycheck by paycheck.

2026 is a notable year for this calculation: it is the first year under Denmark's restored three-bracket income tax structure, which reintroduced mellemskat (middle-bracket tax) after several years without one, and introduced an entirely new top-topskat (additional top-bracket tax) on very high incomes. Combined with the long-standing AM-bidrag (labour market contribution), bundskat (bottom-bracket tax), and kommuneskat (municipal tax, which varies by all 98 of Denmark's municipalities), a Danish payslip runs through more separate tax layers than most countries' -- this calculator walks through every one of them with the current, verified 2026 rate for each.

Denmark's currency is the Danish krone (DKK), and every figure in this calculator is denominated in DKK.

How This Is Calculated

  1. AM-bidrag (labour market contribution). A flat 8% of your gross wage income, withheld before any other Danish tax and unchanged since 2008. It funds unemployment benefits, sick pay, and parental leave.

$$\text{AM-bidrag} = \text{Gross Salary} \times 8\%$$

  1. Personal income after AM-bidrag. Gross salary minus AM-bidrag. This is the base for bundskat, mellemskat, topskat, and top-topskat (this calculator assumes wage income only, with no pension contributions or capital income reducing this figure further -- see below).
  1. Standard employment deductions. Two deductions apply automatically to nearly every wage earner, both calculated on gross wage income (the same base AM-bidrag itself uses, i.e. before AM-bidrag is subtracted): - Beskæftigelsesfradrag (employment allowance): 12.75% of gross salary, capped at DKK 63,300/year. - Jobfradrag (job allowance): 4.5% of gross salary above DKK 235,200/year, capped at an additional DKK 3,100/year.
  1. Bundskat (bottom-bracket tax). 12.01% of personal income after AM-bidrag that exceeds the personfradrag (personal allowance) of DKK 54,100 -- applied to every taxpayer, with no lower income exemption beyond this allowance.
  1. Mellemskat and topskat (middle- and top-bracket tax). Both apply directly to personal income after AM-bidrag once it crosses a fixed kroner threshold -- not reduced by the personfradrag, beskæftigelsesfradrag, or jobfradrag, which only affect bundskat and municipal tax (see below): - Mellemskat: 7.5% of personal income after AM-bidrag exceeding DKK 641,200 (new for 2026). - Topskat: 7.5% of personal income after AM-bidrag exceeding DKK 777,900. - Top-topskat: an additional 5% on personal income after AM-bidrag exceeding DKK 2,592,700 (new for 2026, on top of both mellemskat and topskat where they also apply).
  1. Kommuneskat and kirkeskat (municipal and church tax). Both apply to personal income after AM-bidrag, minus beskæftigelsesfradrag, jobfradrag, and the personfradrag -- this base does get the benefit of the employment deductions, unlike the mellemskat/topskat/top-topskat base above. Kommuneskat is set independently by each of Denmark's 98 municipalities (23.39%–26.30% in 2026, national average 25.049%); kirkeskat applies only to registered members of the Danish National Church (Folkekirken), at a rate that varies by municipality (national average among payers is about 0.64%).
  1. Net salary. Gross salary minus AM-bidrag, bundskat, mellemskat, topskat, top-topskat, kommuneskat, and kirkeskat.

Worked Example

Using the calculator's default inputs:

  • Gross Annual Salary: DKK 450,000.00
  • Municipal Tax Rate: 25.049% (2026 national average)
  • Church Tax: Not a member (0%)

Step by step:

  1. AM-bidrag: 8% × DKK 450,000.00 = DKK 36,000.00. Personal income after AM-bidrag = DKK 414,000.00.
  2. Beskæftigelsesfradrag: min(12.75% × 450,000, 63,300) = DKK 57,375.00 (below the cap). Jobfradrag: min(4.5% × (450,000−235,200), 3,100) = min(9,666, 3,100) = DKK 3,100.00 (capped).
  3. Bundskat: base = 414,000 − 54,100 = DKK 359,900.00; tax = 359,900 × 12.01% = DKK 43,223.99.
  4. Mellemskat/topskat/top-topskat: DKK 414,000 is below all three thresholds (DKK 641,200/777,900/2,592,700) → DKK 0.00 for all three.
  5. Kommuneskat: base = 414,000 − 57,375 − 3,100 − 54,100 = DKK 299,425.00; tax = 299,425 × 25.049% = DKK 75,002.97. Kirkeskat: not a member → DKK 0.00.
  6. Total tax: 36,000.00 + 43,223.99 + 75,002.97 = DKK 154,226.96.
  7. Net salary: DKK 450,000.00 − DKK 154,226.96 = DKK 295,773.04/year, or DKK 24,647.75/month.

For comparison, the same salary earner in Copenhagen (23.39% kommuneskat, the lowest 2026 rate) would owe less municipal tax and take home more per month than this national-average example. A higher earner at DKK 900,000/year crosses both the mellemskat and topskat thresholds, owing DKK 14,010.00 in mellemskat and DKK 3,757.50 in topskat on top of the other components.

What This Does Not Account For

  • Month-by-month trækprocent withholding mechanics. This calculator estimates your full-year tax liability and divides evenly by 12, the way a year-end assessment works. Actual monthly payroll withholding uses your personal trækprocent and fradrag from your forskudsopgørelse, which can distribute unevenly across the year for irregular income, bonuses, or mid-year job changes.
  • Pension contributions. Contributions to a ratepension, livrente, or arbejdsmarkedspension reduce both the AM-bidragsgrundlag and personal income in reality; this calculator assumes zero pension contributions.
  • Capital income (kapitalindkomst). Interest income, capital gains, and similar are not modeled; bundskat technically applies to personal income plus positive net capital income.
  • Other itemized deductions (ligningsmæssige fradrag). Befordringsfradrag (commuter deduction -- see our dedicated calculator for this), union dues, and other itemized deductions beyond the standard beskæftigelsesfradrag/jobfradrag are not included.
  • Per-municipality exact kommuneskat/kirkeskat. Rather than modeling all 98 municipalities individually, this calculator uses an adjustable rate defaulting to the 2026 national average; enter your own municipality's published rate for a more precise estimate.
  • Transferable unused personfradrag between spouses. Denmark allows an unused personal allowance to transfer to a spouse; this calculator models a single filer only.

Common Pitfalls

  • Assuming mellemskat and topskat get the same deductions as bundskat. Beskæftigelsesfradrag, jobfradrag, and the personfradrag reduce your bundskat and kommuneskat bill, but not your mellemskat, topskat, or top-topskat -- these three apply to the raw personal income figure after AM-bidrag only.
  • Forgetting 2026 is the first year of the restored three-bracket system. If you're comparing to a 2025 or earlier estimate, remember mellemskat and top-topskat did not exist yet -- a straightforward "same rates as last year" comparison will understate 2026 tax for higher earners.
  • Ignoring municipal tax variation. The gap between Copenhagen's 23.39% and the highest 2026 municipalities' 26.30% is nearly 3 percentage points of your entire kommune-taxable income -- significant for anyone comparing job offers across municipalities.
  • Treating this calculator's monthly figure as an exact payslip match. Real payslips reflect your specific trækprocent and fradrag from your forskudsopgørelse, which can differ slightly from an even 1/12 split of the annual liability, especially if your income varies month to month.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a forskudsopgørelse and how does it relate to this calculator?
It's SKAT's preliminary estimate of your full-year tax liability, issued each autumn for the following year, from which SKAT derives the trækprocent and fradrag your employer applies to your monthly pay. This calculator estimates the same underlying annual liability directly from the statutory rates, rather than simulating the trækprocent mechanism itself.
Why did my tax bill change so much for 2026 compared to 2025?
2026 reintroduced mellemskat (middle-bracket tax) at 7.5% above DKK 641,200 and added a new top-topskat at 5% above DKK 2,592,700 -- neither applied in 2025. If your personal income after AM-bidrag exceeds DKK 641,200, expect a materially higher tax bill than a naive year-over-year comparison would suggest.
Do beskæftigelsesfradrag and jobfradrag reduce my topskat?
No. Both are computed on your gross wage income and reduce your bundskat and municipal-tax base, but the mellemskat/topskat/top-topskat thresholds compare against your personal income after AM-bidrag directly, without subtracting these deductions.
How much does my municipality actually matter?
A lot, for the kommuneskat portion. The 2026 rates span from 23.39% (Copenhagen) to 26.30% (several municipalities) -- nearly 3 percentage points of your kommune-taxable income, which for a typical earner can mean several thousand DKK per year in take-home pay.
Is church tax (kirkeskat) mandatory?
No -- only registered members of the Danish National Church (Folkekirken) pay it, and you can formally deregister (udmeldelse) at any time to stop owing it going forward. It is not tied to religious belief in a legal sense, only to formal church membership status.
