Quick Answer: 100 square feet is 11.1111 yd². A square yard is 9 square feet, so a 180 square foot room is 20 square yards, and 75 m² is 807.2933 square feet.
What does this calculator do?
This square feet to square yards converter changes an area between square inches, square feet, square yards, square metres, acres, hectares and square miles. Carpet, turf, fabric and some flooring are sold by the square yard, while rooms and houses are measured in square feet, so this is the conversion people need at the store.
The other units cover property listings, land and metric plans.
Area units are length units squared, and that is where most mistakes start. A yard is 3 feet, but a square yard is 3 × 3 = 9 square feet. A foot is 12 inches, but a square foot is 144 square inches. The converter stores each area unit as the exact square of its length (a foot is exactly 0.3048 m, so a square foot is exactly 0.09290304 m²), plus the acre at 43,560 square feet and the hectare at 10,000 m².
It converts an area you already have. To get the area of a room, multiply its length by its width first, in the same unit, and enter the result.
Using the Square Feet to Square Yards Converter
- Work out the area if you have only dimensions: a 12 by 15 foot room is 12 × 15 = 180 square feet.
- Type the area and choose its unit in From.
- Choose the unit you want in To.
- Read the result at the top. The cards list square feet, square yards, square metres, acres, hectares, square inches and square miles.
The presets load a 180 square foot room, one square yard, a 75 m² flat and one acre.
How is this calculated?
- Choose the units. A negative area is read as zero.
- Convert through the square metre. Each area unit is stored as its exact size in square metres: the square inch as 0.0254², the square foot as 0.3048², the square yard as 0.9144², the acre as 43,560 square feet, the hectare as 10,000 m² and the square mile as 5,280² square feet. The converter multiplies your number by the size of the unit you started in and divides by the size of the unit you want.
yd² = (ft² × 0.3048²)/0.9144² = ft²/9
m² = ft² × 0.09290304; acres = ft²/43560
- Round for display only. Square feet, yards and metres are shown to four decimal places; acres and hectares to six; square miles to nine; square inches to two.
Worked Example
The default, 100 square feet to square yards:
- Square yards: 100 ÷ 9 = 11.111..., shown as 11.1111 yd².
- Square metres: 100 × 0.09290304 = 9.2903 m².
- Acres: 0.002296 ac. Square inches: 14,400 in².
A 12 by 15 foot room: 12 × 15 = 180 square feet. 180 ÷ 9 = 20 yd² of carpet, before any allowance for waste or seams. That is 16.7225 m².
A 75 m² flat: 75 ÷ 0.09290304 = 807.2933 ft², or 89.6993 yd².
One acre: 43,560 ft², which is 4,840 yd², 4,046.8564 m² and 0.404686 ha.
Is 10 Feet Square the Same as 10 Square Feet?
No, and the difference is large. "10 feet square" describes a square 10 feet on each side, which has an area of 10 × 10 = 100 square feet. "10 square feet" is an area of 10 square feet, which is a square only a little over 3 feet on a side.
When a listing says a room is 12 feet square, it means 144 square feet. The converter works with the area, so enter 100 for a 10 foot square space, not 10.

640 acres make one square mile.
What does this calculator not account for?
- Dimensions. Enter an area, not a length and width. Multiply them first, or use the square footage calculator, which works from room dimensions.
- Waste and pattern repeats. Carpet comes in rolls of fixed width, and patterned materials need matching. Order more than the bare area.
- The US survey acre. Older US land records used the survey foot. NIST retired it at the end of 2022. The two acres differ by a few parts per million, and this page uses the international one.
- Circles and odd shapes. The area of a circle or a triangle needs its own formula; the geometry calculators handle those.
What mistakes do people make with this?
- Dividing by 3 instead of 9. A square yard is 3 feet by 3 feet, so it holds 9 square feet. Dividing by 3 gives an answer three times too big.
- Confusing "feet square" with "square feet". See the section above: 10 feet square is 100 square feet.
- Using 10 for square metres to square feet. A square metre is 10.76 square feet, and the gap is noticeable on a whole house.
- Mixing units in the dimensions. A room 12 feet by 150 inches must be put in one unit before multiplying.
