Materials and measurements for home projects, from square footage and cubic yards to concrete, drywall, flooring and fencing.
These calculators turn the measurements of a room, a yard or a wall into the amount of material a project needs: square footage for flooring and drywall, cubic yards for gravel, mulch and concrete, and counts of boards, bricks, studs and sheets. Each one shows the geometry it uses, usually a length times a width, sometimes times a depth, so you can see where the number came from.
A material estimate has two parts: the area or volume, which is exact arithmetic, and an allowance for waste, which is a judgement. These pages keep the two apart. The calculator gives the measured quantity, then applies the waste allowance you choose as a separate, visible line, so a default is never hidden inside the total.
Lengths go in as feet, inches or metres, chosen on each page, and every conversion uses the international foot of exactly 0.3048 metres. Bulk materials sold by the cubic yard are worked in cubic feet first and converted at 27 cubic feet to the yard. Prices never come built in: a cost line appears only when you type in your own quote.

- How much mulch do I need for this bed?
- Measure the bed and decide the depth, then use the cubic yards calculator. It shows the volume in cubic feet and in cubic yards, the unit a landscape supplier quotes.Gravel Calculator: Cubic Yards and Tons of Gravel, Sand and Stone
- How many boxes of flooring should I buy?
- Get the floor area from the square footage calculator, then enter it with the coverage printed on one box in the flooring calculator, with the waste allowance you want.Square Footage Calculator for Rooms, Triangles and CirclesFlooring Calculator: Square Feet and Boxes to Buy
How these calculators fit together
Area
The square footage calculator adds up rectangular, triangular and circular sections of a floor plan. Flooring, drywall and wallpaper estimates start from the same area and divide by the coverage of one plank box, sheet or roll.

Volume and bulk material
Gravel, sand, stone, mulch and soil are sold by the cubic yard. The cubic yards calculator multiplies area by depth and converts. The concrete calculator does the same for slabs and round forms such as sonotubes.

Framing, roofing and fencing
The stud calculator counts studs along a wall at a chosen spacing. The roof pitch calculator converts rise over run into an angle and a roof area. The fence calculator counts posts and pickets for a run of fence. The board foot calculator measures lumber the way hardwood is priced, and the construction calculator adds and divides lengths in feet, inches and fractions.

Walls, siding and the yard
Brick, siding and wallpaper are counted from wall area: bricks from the face of one brick plus its mortar joint, siding in squares of 100 square feet, wallpaper by whole strips per roll. The sod calculator turns a lawn into square feet and pallets.

Heating, solar, water and land
The furnace size calculator applies the Manual S output window to a heating load you supply. The solar panel calculator sizes an array from your yearly use and sun hours. The aquarium and pipe volume calculators give gallons and water weight, and the acreage calculator converts land dimensions to acres and hectares.

Sewing
The circle skirt calculator gives the waist and hem radii and the fabric for a full, half or quarter circle. The quilt backing calculator works out how many widths of fabric to join and which way the seams should run.

What these tools leave out
- Waste allowances depend on the material and the layout. The calculators apply the allowance you enter; they do not know how your room is cut.
- Structural decisions such as footing sizes, joist spans and load ratings belong to the building code and an engineer, not to a quantity estimate.
- Prices are not included unless a page asks you for one. Material costs vary too much by place and season to build in.
All Calculators
Works out the water volume of a rectangular or round fish tank in US gallons, litres and cubic feet, less glass and fill gap, and the weight of that water.
Works out the board feet in pieces of lumber from thickness, width and length, with linear feet, cubic feet, cubic metres and cost at a price the user enters.
Counts the bricks for a single-wythe wall from its area, openings, brick size and joint thickness, adds a waste allowance, and works out the net mortar volume.
Works out the waist and hem radii of a full, half or quarter circle skirt from the waist and length, the hem edge length, and the fabric to buy for a given fabric width.
Works out the concrete for a slab or for round tube-form columns in cubic yards and cubic metres, adds a separate waste allowance, counts bags and prices it at the user's rate.
Adds, subtracts, multiplies and divides lengths written in feet, inches and fractions, and gives the answer as a tape-measure reading, in decimal feet and in metric.
Works out the volume of a box or cylinder from its dimensions and gives it in cubic feet, cubic yards, cubic metres, cubic inches, US gallons and litres.
Counts the drywall sheets for a rectangular room from its walls and ceiling, less doors and windows, with a waste allowance shown separately.
Works out the floor area of a room, adds a separate waste allowance, and counts the boxes of flooring to buy from the coverage per box, with an optional cost.
Turns a design heating load into the furnace output range ACCA Manual S allows, 100% to 140% of the load, and the input ratings that match at a given AFUE.
Works out the cubic yards of gravel, stone, sand, soil or mulch an area needs at a given depth, adds a separate allowance, and estimates the weight from a bulk density the user enters.
Works out the acreage of a rectangular or triangular plot, or of an area given in another unit, and shows it in hectares, square feet, square metres, square yards and square miles.
Counts the posts, rails and pickets for a straight fence run, spacing the posts evenly at or under a maximum and adding spare pickets as a separate line.
Works out the volume inside a pipe, hose or tube from its inside diameter and length, in gallons, litres and cubic feet, with volume per foot and per metre and the water weight.
Works out the backing size for a quilt, the number of fabric widths to join, the seam direction that uses less fabric, and the yardage to buy.
Converts a rise and run into a roof pitch, angle, slope percentage and multiplier, and turns a footprint into roof area, roofing squares and shingle bundles.
