9 Calculators

Everyday, Education & Fun

Grades and final exam scores, aspect ratios, reading and typing time, win rates, letter to number codes and text tools.

These are the calculators for questions that come up at school, at a desk and at play: what you need on a final exam to reach a course grade, a weighted grade from assignments and their weights, the aspect ratio of a screen or an image, how long a book or an audiobook will take, a team’s win percentage, and codes that turn letters into numbers.

Each one does a small piece of arithmetic carefully and shows its working. A grade calculator, for example, states whether it treats a weight as a share of the whole course or of the work done so far, because the same scores give different answers under the two readings and a syllabus can use either.

Text tools that transform characters, such as superscript and upside-down text, map each character through a published Unicode table and say which characters have no equivalent, so you know what will display on someone else’s screen.

How these calculators fit together

Grades

The final grade calculator works backwards from the course grade you want to the exam score you need. The grade calculator averages scores by weight or by points and shows each item’s contribution.

Screens and images

The aspect ratio calculator reduces a width and height to their simplest ratio, such as 16:9, and scales one dimension when you change the other.

Reading, games and codes

The reading time calculator turns a word count or an audiobook length into time at your own speed. The win percentage calculator handles wins, losses and ties. The letters to numbers converter maps A to 1 through Z to 26 and sums a word.

Text and pixel art

The superscript generator raises or lowers text with the Unicode superscript and subscript characters, and the upside down text generator turns a line through 180 degrees; both list the characters that have no equivalent. The Minecraft circle generator draws a circle of any width in blocks, with the count for each row.

What these tools leave out

  • Grading policies vary. The calculators apply the weights you enter; they do not know your school’s rounding or curving rules unless a page asks for them.
  • Reading speed varies by reader and by text. The time shown follows from the speed you choose.
  • A transformed character only displays if the reader’s font includes it.

All Calculators

Aspect Ratio Calculator (16:9 and Any Width and Height)

Reduces a width and height to their lowest whole-number aspect ratio by the greatest common divisor, scales the height for a new width, and names the nearest common screen or photo ratio.

Audiobook Calculator and Reading Time Calculator

Works out how long an audiobook takes at a chosen playback speed and the time saved against normal speed, and how long a word count takes to read at a chosen words-per-minute rate.

Final Grade Calculator: What Do I Need on My Final?

Works out the final exam score needed to reach a target course grade from the current grade and the final's weight, and shows the best and lowest course grade the final can still produce.

Letters to Numbers Converter (A1Z26 Alphabet Code)

Converts text to alphabet positions from A = 1 to Z = 26 and numbers back to letters, with the sum for each word and the whole text, reducing accented letters to their base letter.

Minecraft Circle Generator (Pixel Circle Chart)

Draws a circle of a chosen width on a grid of blocks by testing each block's centre against the circle, as an outline one block thick or a filled disc, with the blocks in each row and the total.

Superscript Generator (and Subscript Text)

Converts text to Unicode superscript or subscript characters using the decompositions in the Unicode Character Database, and lists the characters that have no raised or lowered form.

Upside Down Text Generator (Flip Text 180 Degrees)

Turns text through 180 degrees by swapping each character for a Unicode turned character, a rotated letter or the nearest lookalike and reversing the order, and lists the characters with no equivalent.

Weighted Grade Calculator (by Percent Weights or by Points)

Works out a course grade from up to five scores and their percent weights, or from points earned over points possible, reading weights as a share of the work so far or of the whole course, with each item's contribution.

Win Percentage Calculator (Win Rate With Ties)

Works out a win percentage from wins, losses and ties with ties counted as half a win, left out or counted as not won, shows the standings-style decimal, and finds the wins needed in remaining games for a target.
